Sustainable Energy For All - Africa hub

NGODesign, UX, Development

In September 2011, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon shared his vision for making sustainable energy for all a reality by 2030. He launched Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL), a global initiative that brings all sectors of society together with the aim of providing universal access to modern energy services, doubling the improvement in energy efficiency and doubling the share of renewable energy.

The Brief

The African Hub is responsible for coordinating and facilitating the 44 opted-in African countries who have signed up to the SE4ALL initiative.

We were asked to create a website that would become the online destination for information sharing, matchmaking and knowledge management for the SE4ALL project in Africa by empowering end users with the ability to find and monitor activity across Africa.

The Challenge

  1. Launching one of the first dedicated SE4ALL Hub websites meant there was no brand guidelines to work from. We extracted a working pallette of colours from the existing logo to help present the content in the best light.
  2. Not all content could be planned for. We delivered a modular pattern library that allowed the client to select the best patterns for the story or content.
  3. With 44 countries each having a dedicated page for data and insight it was essential that the site made it as simple as possible to keep data up to date and in a centralised location.
  4. The International nature of the initiative meant the site needed be ready for multilingual content from day one
  5. The Hub serves as a go-to resource for relevant news and documents. The ability to categorise resources and display on relevant pages was important as well as the ability to manage resources effectively in the back end of the site.

The Result

Built in the Typo3 content management system (CMS) the resulting site is a powerful and flexible website offering a modular design that will allow the site to grow with the SE4All initiative.

Typo3’s competent file manager handles the websites large amount of documents and resources, combining with configurable catalog plugins allows for any page to display relevant news, events or documents.

The large amount of country data was implemented using a custom plugin. Data is stored in a central location using a google spreadsheet for ease of access and management. The plugin then divides data by country and displays on relevant pages. This approach also ensures visual consistency is maintained throughout.
