Backend Developer

£34,000 - £38,000

Liquid Light is looking for a Backend Developer to support our team of both front and backend developers, designers and account managers.

We are looking for someone who has at least 2 years of commercial experience with backend programming and databases. Your role will range from actioning support requests and working on projects to helping progress internal procedures and tools, all while learning our development stack.

We use TYPO3 as our main CMS, which has a steep learning curve but is highly flexible once you’re familiar with it. We’re looking for someone who isn’t phased by a challenge and, with the support of our CTO and development team, can thrive in the role.

We train our employees using real-world code on real tasks while supplementing theories with popular training courses, books and websites. Ideally, you will deploy code to production within your first week and be completing support tickets independently within the first month. Solutions to problems are generally found together with a colleague and all code is fully browsable in our hosted Git environment, allowing you to learn from work others are doing.

We often work from the office so someone who can travel to Brighton is a necessity for this role (frequency of visits is negotiable).

The interview process consists of two or three interviews with our CTO, along with developers and other staff members. We don’t do technical interviews and encourage the meetings to be a two-way conversation - you are interviewing us as much as we are interviewing you.

If you have any questions about the role or responsibilities, do not hesitate to email [email protected]

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop on live projects and existing client websites
  • Work with and support our backend development team
  • Follow steps and procedures to carry out upgrades and conversions
  • Collaborate on documentation with the team
  • Work with designers and account managers to help debug or explain issues in plain language

Required skills:

  • Knowledge of PHP and MySQL (or comparable backend experience)
  • Comfortable using Composer
  • Great communicator
  • An understanding of version control
  • Preferably command line experience (sys-admin is a bonus, but not a necessity)
  • A person who has the drive to, and is willing to, learn new things and grow as a developer and team member.
