The British Pharmacological Society

Membership organisation, CRM integration

Project background

The BPS website had accumulated significant technical and structural debt, running on an unsupported CMS with broken search, inaccessible content, and no mobile optimisation. Beyond the technical failings, content was organised around internal team structures rather than audience needs, key information was difficult to find, and the site failed to communicate the warmth, breadth, or ambition of the Society. Members felt invisible, the brand appeared dated, and many visitors – particularly clinicians, industry professionals, and early career researchers – did not feel the site was for them.

Our brief

The new website needed to support BPS's strategic priorities: growing and retaining membership across all career stages; positioning the Society as the premier destination for pharmacology professionals and trusted scientific information; strengthening education, careers, and clinical pharmacology provision; increasing the visibility of policy and public engagement work; and supporting commercial sustainability by diversifying income beyond journals. Throughout, the website should foster a genuine sense of community and make it easy for people to get involved.

The solution

With the challenge, objectives, and audiences clearly defined, the new site structure is structred intuitively around audiences and career stages; prominently surfacing funding, events, and membership benefits.

Editorial teams are empowered to publish and manage content with ease through a modern, well-supported CMS. An integration with their membership CRM is saving their marketing team valuable time by pulling through event listing and up-to-date membership group information.

The site tells member stories and projects a modern and inclusive brand, with a fresh and accessible design. BPS is represented as friendly yet authoritative, established yet progressive – less dry and matter-of-fact, and more human and engaging.
