For over a decade, Liquid Light has collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO) on multiple global health projects and initiatives with a focus on digital transformation, website design and development and ongoing support and consultancy.
Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health (ATACH)
ATACH works to realise the ambition set at COP26 to build climate resilient and sustainable health systems. Using the collective power of WHO Member States and other country stakeholders, they promote the integration of climate change and health considerations into respective national, regional, and global plans.
For this newer WHO initiative, we:
- Created an engaging website that showcases country commitments, and presents the mission, partners, and impact of the ATACH
- Developed interactive visualisations for tracking progress
- Built a secure members area with specialised functionality including a directory of experts
- Implemented moderated resource sharing capabilities for members
WHO Global Health Repository
The WHO's data portal serves as a critical resource for health policies worldwide, and sits within the main WHO website.
When we began our partnership, they faced several key challenges:
- Complex data presentation that made information inaccessible to general audiences, while simultaneously limiting advanced users' ability to perform detailed analysis
- Fragmented navigation systems that created disorientation across different platforms
- Inconsistent user interfaces that hindered effective information discovery
- Search functionality that didn't align with researchers' needs and expectations
As the organization's primary data platform – receiving over 13% of WHO's total web traffic – we recognized its mission-critical importance. Our approach included:
- Conducting extensive stakeholder interviews at WHO's Geneva headquarters
- Developing prototype-driven learning through "straw man" concepts
- Creating intuitive landing pages with flexible editor controls
- Implementing a pattern library to ensure consistency while maintaining adaptability
- Designing a customisable data explorer for power users
The new repository was developed by WHO’s in-house development team, based on UX specifications and design systems produced by Liquid Light.
Health Data Collaborative (HDC)
The Health Data Collaborative (HDC) is a UHC2030 related initiative that convenes stakeholders from across the health data ecosystem to strengthen countries’ health information systems through effective collaboration, enabling countries to better monitor and attain the health-related sustainable development goals (SDGs). For this UHC2030 related initiative, we:
- Performed comprehensive stakeholder research through interviews and focus groups
- Consolidated multiple documentation repositories into a unified public knowledge base
- Enhanced metadata management across resources, improving resource discoverability and visibility
- Worked with HDC internal teams in optimising content for online audiences while maintaining the technical accuracy of the source material
As a partnership of over 50 developing countries, development agencies and UN organizations, the new IHP+ website had to satisfy many different criteria. Liquid Light guided us through the design and development process in a very professional way, with excellent results and a website that we are all happy with.
UHC2030
UHC2030 is the global movement to build stronger health systems for universal health coverage. It provides a platform to convene and build connections through joint high-level events and gatherings and contributes advocacy, tools, guidance, knowledge and learning. As the global movement for universal health coverage, UHC2030 required a distinct yet connected digital presence. Our work included:
- Developing a comprehensive visual identity
- Designing and building their primary website and resource repository
- Conducting user and stakeholder research
- Providing ongoing consultancy for feature development including monthly analytics and SEO insights
The value of long-term partnerships
Our long-term partnership with WHO has delivered several key outcomes across all the projects we have worked on, including improved data accessibility for both general audiences and more specialised researchers, streamlined content and resource management across multiple platforms, enhanced information discovery, and improved engagement with key stakeholders.
What makes our relationship with WHO effective is the deep institutional knowledge we've developed over our years of working together. This enables us to understand their complex stakeholder landscape, provide strategic guidance based on accumulated insights and deploy solutions that build upon our previous work.
Looking forward
As WHO continues to lead global health initiatives, we remain committed to supporting their digital transformation journey. For organisations seeking to transform their digital presence while maintaining mission focus, get in touch with us today to see how we can help.
